Communion of Nations
1991. Available in VHS and DVD format

Informative and entertaining. Using a mix of historic film and personal interviews, this 28-minute video highlights the work of the International Catholic Organizations (ICOs) at the United Nations. It examines the cooperative relationship that has grown over the years between the UN and Catholic lay groups as well as the evolving role of the Holy See’s Permanent Observer Mission to the UN. Interspersed between footage of world events and activities are the reflections of ICO and UN representatives on such issues as human rights, children’s welfare, peace and the environment. This introduction to the many Catholic organizations, from Caritas International to the World Union of Catholic Women’s Organizations, and their involvement with the major moral questions facing the international community, is interesting and informative and not a little inspiring. Excellent as a teaching aid and for use in discussion programs, but stands on its own as compelling family viewing.

The video is accompanied by a booklet comprising a discussion guide, biographies of key people and a glossary.

At The United Nations
The Story of the NCWC/USCC Office for United Nations Affairs 1946-1972

The history of Catholic participation in the United Nations is told in this highly-readable account by Jean Gartlan. The International Catholic Organizations Information Center, in existence for the past 26 years, is the sucessor to the National Catholic Welfare Conference/United States Catholic Conference Office for United Nations Affairs which existed for the previous 26 years. “At the United Nations: The Story of the NCWC/USCC office for United Nations Affairs 1946-1972” (Gateway Press, 1998) recounts this Catholic participation in the history of the UN.
